Christmas Poems

CHRISTMAS POEM 2004

Over the years I have come to doubt,
What some say Christmas is all about.
It is easy to see many flaws,
In people’s idea of Santa Claus.

Greedy kids pretending to be good.
Parents spending much more than they should.
People rushing all over the place,
Shopping malls without a parking space.

Or is Christmas about coming home,
From all the places we like to roam?
Is it about spending time with Mom,
Or drinking some eggnog laced with Rum?

There must be a very good reason,
Why Christmas is a special season.
It should mean more than gift exchanging,
And all that living room rearranging.

Lately it has became pretty wild,
To say Christmas is about a Child.
Especially if you use his name,
That is not part of the silly game.

It is celebrating a wondrous birth,
When Jesus Christ left heaven for earth.
Though we try so hard, we never can,
Explain why God would become a man.

This Christmas, fill your hearts with wonder.
Along with Mary, you should ponder,
About all the wondrous things that took place,
When God came to save the human race.

CHRISTMAS POEM 2005

Even though things are calm on our soil,
Our world seems to be in turmoil.
In Iraq a war still rages.
Many prayed for the hostages.

This year has been a time for pain.
Our neighbours felt the wind and rain.
They knew the fury and the wrath,
Of being in a hurricane’s path.

How can this be a time for mirth,
When there is little peace on earth?
In this year of much pain and strife,
What’s the worth of a human life?

In the midst of this campaigning,
Do we wonder who is gaining?
As we put on our winter coat,
Do we know who deserves our vote?

In all the trials of this year,
When many have had much to fear,
We must look for a good reason,
To celebrate this great season.

What thoughts are in each of our hearts,
As we fill up our shopping carts?
In many stores the carols play.
Does anyone hear what they say?

Ponder how we are reconciled,
By the blood of the Christmas child.
If we but repent and believe,
In our hearts, him will we receive.

CHRISTMAS POEM 2006

It has been an interesting year.
The birth of a grandchild brought a cheer.
She has brought so much gladness to my life.
It’s been a thrill for both me and my wife.

The loss of special people brought a tear.
It is hard to bury ones that I held dear.
But it was not without hope that we grieve.
We know that in Jesus they came to believe.

We witnessed two men go from third to first.
I wonder, did they vote for the least worst?
Now that each party has a new leader,
Will that become an election feeder?

This winter we have seen a lot of snow.
We have truly felt the bitter winds blow.
But at least we have places to keep warm.
There are those without shelter from the storm.

It’s good that Christmas comes in winter time.
When we’re cold our thoughts can turn to the sublime.
As we are driving through the ice and snow,
The birth of a Child can make our hearts glow.

Now, as this year’s end begins to draw near,
We realize that we have nothing to fear.
Greeting loved ones or committing them to dust
Because we know in whom we have come to trust.

CHRISTMAS POEM 2007

Why are we gathered here on this cold winter’s night?
Why have we come to sing carols by candlelight?
Why do we have all these readings to contemplate?
What is there about this season to celebrate?

We are here to worship the One who is the light.
Who made the universe by his power and might,
Yet left all the worship of heaven for a womb,
And was obedient all the way to the tomb.

He is the One who made Elizabeth rejoice.
He came, her babe leaped and she lifted up her voice.
From her we have learned what we would never have guessed,
That is not the rich but the humble who are blessed.

A virgin birth is impossible, it would seem,
But Joseph believed when he heard it in a dream.
Joseph was a man who was both faithful and kind.
God as a father for his Son had him in mind.

The shepherds were what we could call blue collar folk,
Yet to them on that far hillside the angel spoke.
When they heard the good news, to the manger they rushed.
When they’d seen the holy Child, they could not be hushed.

Now, I bid you all to join these people in praise.
Jesus’ birth is the reason for these holidays.
At this holy time, let’s join our voices in song,
To Him who came to put an end to sin and wrong.

CHRISTMAS POEM 2008

It is only a few days before Christmas.
Our shopping has been helped by the price of gas.
But what does that do to our province’s budget?
How long ago was it that we were in debt?

There’s a big economic crisis down south.
It’s a bad time there if you want to sell your house.
They’re pinning their hopes on their new president.
Electing a black was without precedent.

Some say Canada is in much better shape.
They say that Alberta will even escape,
The recession that threatens those below us.
But that’s a subject for experts to discuss.

Our troops are still fighting in Afghanistan.
We would like to bring them all home if we can.
But then who would that leave to fight over there?
Fighting for freedom is something we should share.

Why is this not a season of peace on earth?
What did the angels say at our Saviour’s birth?
Why are so many Christians still persecuted?
Even while their beliefs are never refuted.

Sometimes we forget to read the whole story,
That it’s through suffering we come to glory.
After all this was the path that Jesus took.
This path was laid out for him in the good Book.

So we must not forget in these troubled times,
As we listen to all the carols and chimes,
That the peace Jesus promised is in our hearts.
This peace triumphs over the Enemy’s darts.

CHRISTMAS POEM 2009

Another Christmas will fairly soon come and go.
Another full season of rushing to and fro.
Another time of looking for the perfect gift.
Another reason to forget all about thrift.

Will your Christmas be filled with peace, goodwill and joy?
Will your thoughts be focused on the birth of a boy?
Will you be pondering the great incarnation?
Or will this be just an empty celebration?

This year our thoughts will not just be on the Christ child.
We have another reason and another child.
We don’t now whether it’ll be a girl or a boy.
Either way he or she surely will bring us joy.

So even though it seems today is bitterly cold,
We’ll soon have another wondrous grandchild to hold.
How many grandchildren we’ll have on Christmas day,
Whether it’s two or three we cannot really say.

I know that Jesus wasn’t born in the winter time.
Shepherds would be out watching sheep in the spring time.
They even got the year wrong by about four years.
But this is this the best time for holiday cheers.

Think of what winter would be like without Christmas.
How slowly would those bitterly cold days pass?
Without the thoughts of the Christ Child to warm our hearts,
The wind and the snow would surely chill all our parts.

CHRISTMAS POEM 2004

Over the years I have come to doubt,
What some say Christmas is all about.
It is easy to see many flaws,
In people’s idea of Santa Claus.

Greedy kids pretending to be good.
Parents spending much more than they should.
People rushing all over the place,
Shopping malls without a parking space.

Or is Christmas about coming home,
From all the places we like to roam?
Is it about spending time with Mom,
Or drinking some eggnog laced with Rum?

There must be a very good reason,
Why Christmas is a special season.
It should mean more than gift exchanging,
And all that living room rearranging.

Lately it has became pretty wild,
To say Christmas is about a Child.
Especially if you use his name,
That is not part of the silly game.

It is celebrating a wondrous birth,
When Jesus Christ left heaven for earth.
Though we try so hard, we never can,
Explain why God would become a man.

This Christmas, fill your hearts with wonder.
Along with Mary, you should ponder,
About all the wondrous things that took place,
When God came to save the human race.

CHRISTMAS POEM 2005

Even though things are calm on our soil,
Our world seems to be in turmoil.
In Iraq a war still rages.
Many prayed for the hostages.

This year has been a time for pain.
Our neighbours felt the wind and rain.
They knew the fury and the wrath,
Of being in a hurricane’s path.

How can this be a time for mirth,
When there is little peace on earth?
In this year of much pain and strife,
What’s the worth of a human life?

In the midst of this campaigning,
Do we wonder who is gaining?
As we put on our winter coat,
Do we know who deserves our vote?

In all the trials of this year,
When many have had much to fear,
We must look for a good reason,
To celebrate this great season.

What thoughts are in each of our hearts,
As we fill up our shopping carts?
In many stores the carols play.
Does anyone hear what they say?

Ponder how we are reconciled,
By the blood of the Christmas child.
If we but repent and believe,
In our hearts, him will we receive.

CHRISTMAS POEM 2006

It has been an interesting year.
The birth of a grandchild brought a cheer.
She has brought so much gladness to my life.
It’s been a thrill for both me and my wife.
